S.T.R.A.W. Inc. ™ Programs

It is important that opportunities are given to vulnerable, often voiceless groups of young women to find solutions that work for them.  It is also important to address the issues (that concern them) before these issues become life problems; as is often the case with girls who come from abusive and neglectful homes.

All of the programming activities at S.T.R.A.W. Inc. ™ Center for Young Women© are intentionally designed, structured and integrated in an effort to:

  • Enable girls to develop new life-coping skills;
  • Teach personal life skills such as problem solving, decision making, setting and achieving goals, and creating and maintaining harmonious interpersonal relationships;
  • Support girls’ educational and  creative experiences;
  • Encourage girls to boost their self-respect and improve relationships

Our Programs

The Yellow Roses Project® engages medium at-risk teen girls who have been (or are being) identified by school administrators as being trouble-makers (by adults as well as their peers), displaying lack of initiative and having low self-esteem and anger management issues.

At-risk underserved girls meet in a quiet small group setting that challenges positive personal social change. The female participants follow a programming track tailored to their challenges and helps curb the anti-social behavior.

The Yellow Roses Project® is an evidence –based two-pronged educational program that helps at-risk underserved girls break the cycle of violence and abuse.

The Middle School Project©  engages adolescent girls at the beginning of the sixth grade academic year (in September) and journeys with them until they complete the final tier of elementary/primary school during June. These at-risk underserved sixth grade girls are encouraged to face issues which accompany their transition to junior high school (known as the most tumultuous period in a girl’s life). It is during this time (amidst physical changes) that girls lose their self esteem, their creative will power, and their voices and desire to dream and excel academically.

The Journey for Teen Girls © challenges teen girls to identify and address issues which have developed during their transition to senior high school. It is during this time that teen girls lose their voices, their self confidence and desire to make sensible decisions which support academic excellence. Participants are given tools and techniques which directly and intentionally foster positive changes for these under-served girls through goal setting, self-discipline, skill development and friendship.

The Learning Journey is an Iterative Process…

and the adult volunteers and mentors with S.T.R.A.W. Inc.™’s Alpha School Tour® realize that one of the best ways to see deeper learning in action is to visit schools throughout the academic year.

These visits are transformative and important for fostering relationships between teachers, administrators, S.T.R.A.W. Inc. ™ Adult Mentors and female students.  These females engage in various activites and programs on the familiar campus learning space.

Through The Alpha School Tour® , S.T.R.A.W. Inc.™ Adult Mentors gain a greater understanding of why it’s important to help young people make integrity based decisions, prepare for college, career and life not only by academic knowledge, but also by mastering skills such as critical thinking, problem solving and teamwork.

The Alpha School Tour® is conducted in New Providence and on the Family Islands throughout the academic year.

Our program empowers girls to learn through leadership, engages them through experiential learning, creates self-direction through flexible options and scheduling, increases self-esteem through community, provides individualized support and sets the highest academic, social and ethical expectations.

S.T.E.A.M. Ahead Enrichment Program®  is a skills based program focusing on nontraditional extracurricular and career interests and initiatives.

The S.T.E.A.M. program specifically challenges girls to be brave, adventerous and to re-invent the box.
