1st Annual International Day Of The Girl Celebrated By S.T.R.A.W. Inc. Center For Young Women
Nassau, Bahamas – The General Assembly of the United Nations resolved at its 66th Session in December 2011 to designate 11 October as the International Day of the Girl Child and for it to be observed every year beginning in 2012.
In reserving a day for advocacy and action by and for girls, the United Nations has signaled its commitment to end gender stereotypes, discrimination, violence and economic disparities that disproportionately affect girls.
The General Assembly recognizes that the empowerment of and investment in girls, which are critical for economic growth, the achievement of all Millennium Development Goals, including the eradication of poverty and extreme poverty, as well as the meaningful participation of girls in decisions that affect them are key in breaking the cycle of discrimination and violence.
